Edmonton Motorshow: The All-New 2018 Mazda6

on

Edmonton, AB–The 42nd Edmonton Motorshow rolled into the Edmonton Expo Centre this week, and it brought with it a number of exciting vehicles. One car that stood out from the rest is the all-new 2018 Mazda6. Don’t get us wrong, the whole Mazda lineup was impressive (especially their SUV options), but the 2018 Mazda6 was, without a doubt, Mazda’s shining star .

LUXURY AT A BARGAIN PRICE

It’s shocking how upscale the 2018 Mazda6 feels considering its $27,000 (MSRP) starting price. Sitting in the comfortable sculpted seats of the sound insulated, driver-oriented cockpit, you’ll enjoy fine leather-trimmed upholstery that’s smooth to the touch, and tons of advanced tech that somehow doesn’t upset the nicely shaped dashboard.

Furthermore, the standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which comes standard to all trims, sits higher up on the dash, making it safer to use, as you don’t have to look down from the road. In fact, with the windshield-projected Active Driving Display showing you essential information, such as your current speed and the speed limit, there’ll be no need to take your eyes off the road for a second.

The Mazda6 cabin is not unlike some you’ll find in traditional luxury sedans, and its exterior is equally striking. The new front-end grill design is bolder, and fits in well with the Mazda6’s superior driving dynamics. And from the rear, with its sleek taillights, you could mistake the Mazda6 for an Audi.

NEW ENGINE, SAME FUN DRIVE

First off, there’s a brand-new engine available. It’s a 2.5 T Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine that produces a whopping 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Mazda’s smooth-shifting SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission is paired to the engine. That gives the 2018 Mazda6 the best powertrain combination in its class.

Second, carried over from last year is Mazda’s award-winning G-Vectoring Control technology. What it does is temporarily reduce engine torque as you enter a turn, improving steering by giving the car more g-force over the front axle. In simple terms, it gives you an unrivaled sense of control of the car that’ll have you feeling like Ricky Bobby, even on your daily commute to work.

FUEL-EFFICIENT BY DESIGN

At its best, the 2018 Mazda6 delivers a class-leading 6.7 L/100km on the highway, and 9.1 L/100km in the city. With the more powerful engine, fuel-efficiency falls to 7.5 L/100km on the highway, which is still competitive within its segment.

In automatic models of the Mazda6, Mazda has added an Intelligent Energy Loop (i-ELOOP) compact capacitator. This is a state-of-the-art regenerative braking system that creates electricity from wasted energy when you slow down. So, as you decelerate, the i-ELOOP capacitator converts your momentum into energy, and directs that power to the vehicle’s numerous electrical components. This is essentially the vehicle tech equivalent to putting your leftover food in the fridge for later. You wouldn’t throw away a perfectly good half-eaten pizza, so why would you throw away potential energy when driving?

INNOVATIVE SAFETY TECHNOLOGY

The 2018 Mazda6 is chock-full of innovative active safety and driver assist features. With Mazda’s available i‑ACTIVSENSE safety technologies, the Mazda6 can practically drive itself. That said, we recommend you keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel.

Some of these technologies, that’ll have your back and help you make smart driving decisions, include:

  • Pedestrian Detection (forward sensing)
  • Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane-keep Assist System
  • Traffic Sign Recognition System

… the list goes on.

THE 2018 MAZDA6, A PLEASANT SURPRISE

In conclusion, the 2018 Mazda6 was exceptionally crafted, stylish, and sporty. That’s why it was one of our favourite picks at the 2018 Edmonton Motorshow. Oh, and it comes at remarkably low price. That makes it a practical alternative to the more established luxury cars on the market.
