The 2018 Kona in Edmonton will start at $20,999 (MSRP) and reach $31,999 (MSRP) for the highest trim level. Destination/delivery costs will be extra, so expect to pay slightly more when all is said and done.
Fun, fuel efficient, and sharp handling are the golden standards of this class of SUV, and the 2018 Kona gets full marks on all of them. There are two excellent engine options available, depending on trim. The base engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with that produces 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque.
The upper level Limited and Ultimate trims, for their part, are equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 175 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. (So, for comparison, four of the five Santa Fe trims have 185 horsepower.) It has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and goes 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
Front-wheel drive is standard on both available powertrains, but there’s also the option of having all-wheel-drive, which is rare for others of this class and is a welcome addition for Edmonton’s rougher driving. Luckily, drivers can choose between three driving modes that alter throttle responsiveness and shift times for economical or more athletic driving performance: Normal, Sport, and Eco.
Fuel economy ratings have yet to be released. Although, if the 2018 Kona is anything like its competitors, we can expect something around 8.0 L/100km to 8.5 L/100km.
In short, the 2018 Kona is predictably a high-performer within its class. Its responsive character, lightweight design, and sharp and adept handling prowess will make it great for city driving as well as the open road.
Comparatively less flashy, but no less well-designed than its exterior, the 2018 Kona’s interior graces us with plenty of usable space, intelligently laid out controls, touches of fine detailing that highlight its unique styling, no matter the trim level.
In terms of cargo space, the Kona offers a capacious 19 cubic feet of cargo (translation: that easily fits a few hockey and golf bags). Furthermore, with the split rear seats that fold down flat, the Kona is a contender for best-in-class interior space, rivaling the Kia Soul and upstaging the Mazda CX-3.
Dimensionally, the 2018 Kona has no issues. Pile in your friends and family; there’s leg space for all.
As far as infotainment goes, it has a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen and the option of upgrading to an 8.0-inch unit in higher trims. Both are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which make scrolling through your music, using google maps, and making calls safe and simple – a true must-have to elevate your driving experience to its best. For the top trim, there’s a premium sound system and Qi wireless device charging.
But you don’t need to make the jump to the top trim to be spoiled with fancy features. The SEL trim (the second lowest trim) features a standard push-button start, a leather wrapped steering wheel, a shift knob, and heated seats. Leather seats and surfaces and moonroofs start at the Limited trim (the third of four).
ACTIVE SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSIST FEATURES
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have not released their ratings yet. However, the 2018 Kona is jam-packed with enough advanced driver assist and active safety features to impress.
Depending on trim level, drivers can expect to have the Edmonton Hyundai Kona come with blind-sport monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic high-beam control.
OTHER EXCITING FEATURES
There are so many features loaded into the 2018 Kona. It can be easy to forget about them in all the excitement.
Among some extra available features (subject to trim level) are:
