2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Review

Given how competitive the SUV market is in 2018, deciding what to buy can be quite the undertaking. There are dozens of strong vehicles to choose from, so it’s important that you, as a potential buyer, figure out what your priorities are. Are you looking for a 2018 SUV in Edmonton that’s fuel efficient? How important is cargo space? Are you focused on looks, comfort, or the latest features? If you’re having a hard time deciding, don’t worry. There’s a well-rounded SUV that’s just right for you, as we’ll explain in our 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe review.

The Sante Fe is great for new families, road trip enthusiasts, and anyone else who loves a comfortable drive. Plus, with a suite of exciting features made available to lower trims, you’ll be able to drive in a level of comfort and security that’s rarely found at a price this low.

  • Top safety scores
  • Well-appointed, spacious interior with plenty of storage capacity
  • Excellent value for your dollar
  • Plenty of exciting and advanced standard features
  • Refined design
  • Fun, sharp driving experience

After last year’s near-complete overhaul–the 2017 model saw the addition of new LED daytime running lights, a brushed metal-look grille, and a revised rear end–the 2018 Santa Fe has received refinements instead of sweeping changes. We will outline all of these below.

Most notably, the 2018 model now offers a new Value package, which includes the following features:

  • Power-operated driver’s seat with improved lumbar support
  • Auto-up for the front windows (power windows with an auto-down function are already standard)
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Fog lights
  • Roof rails
  • Much more

Edmonton’s 2018 Santa Fe comes equipped with Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, along with a three-year free trial. It offers remote engine start with climate control, in-car maintenance scheduling and more. In terms of interior upgrades, an all-new premium wood trim now comes standard in Santa Fe’s with leather.

Luxury at this low of a price is seldom seen, so we highly recommend it!

True to its “sport” designation, the 2018 Santa Fe’s energetic handling and smooth ride combine to give drivers a commanding feel of the road. You may get the impression that you’re driving a zippy hatchback instead of an SUV.

The 2.4-litre GDI engine is the Santa Fe Sport’s base engine, and it produces a healthy 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. In terms of fuel economy, this engine will get you 11.2 L/100km in the city, 8.2 L/100km on the highway, and combined 9.8 L/100km.

Should you desire more power, elect for the optional 2.0-litre turbocharged GDI engine. Engineered with a twin-scroll turbo, this engine packs a punch with 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It also has an impressive towing capacity of 3,500 lbs (1,587.6 kg), rising this SUV up to the task of hauling anything from your boat to your pop-up trailer.

All-wheel drive is available on all trims and all engine options, and it features Active Cornering Control. This improves cornering performance and safety by directing torque to the wheels that have the most grip. Not only is this perfect for Edmonton’s winters, but it makes winding roads a joy to drive.

For even more personalization, the 2018 Santa Fe Sport comes with the Drive Mode Select system, which allows you to choose from among three different driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Depending on which you choose, throttle response and steering effort will be adjusted to suit your driving style.

To summarize, two polished engines and charismatic driving dynamics make the Santa Fe Sport a lot of fun, and should satisfy every one of your daily driving needs.

Excellent safety scores and a wide variety of standard safety and driver assist features make the 2018 Sante Fe Sport an easy pick for anyone who prioritizes safety.

It received the highest possible five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, and is considered a 2018 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS after it achieved the highest score in five crash tests.

The much sought-after Tech package, available to the Ultimate trim, includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  • Lane departure warning
  • Electronic parking brake
  • High-beam assist
  • Steering-responsive headlights that follow the direction of your turn

The base trim offers a different, but nevertheless satisfying Tech package. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the 2.0T trim. Standard on all trims is a rearview camera, but the surround view camera is optional. Also standard is hill-start control and downhill assist.

Additional options include Active Lane Control and Forward-Collision Warning with automatic emergency braking

The 2018 Santa Fe Sport’s interior is spacious in terms of head and legroom for all five potential passengers, and is blessed with a ton of cargo space. It uses terrific materials, regardless of trim, and its intuitive infotainment system will make your driving experience one to brag about.

Approaching minivan standards, the cargo options in the Santa Fe Sport will leave you wondering about all the activities you can do with all that space.

It has more than enough space to store your weekend gear without difficulty, be it camping gear, athletic gear, a bike, or a combination of the three. Additional hidden storage space is also a nifty feature that allows you to store items out of sight under the floor. The second row splits 60/40, too, expanding your cargo options should you need to fit your skis in the trunk.

Family friendly by design, the Santa Fe Sport also features a second row sliding feature, which will permit parents to move the child seat closer to the front seats.

The ride is incredibly quiet too, so if you’re baby falls asleep, it’ll take more than a pothole to wake him or her up.

When it comes to its infotainment system, controls are well placed and easy to understand. An available 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The latter two features make it very easy to listen to music, make hands-free calls, or use navigation.

Interior measurements and visibility are as good as any you’ll see in competing SUVs, and the available panoramic sunroof is a nice touch as well.

If the ample power and space of the 2018 Santa Fe Sport doesn’t quite suit your needs, and if you’re not interested in a light-duty pickup, consider buying the 2018 Santa Fe XL.

It comes with an extra row of seating, so it seats up to 7! It also has an extra boost of power coming from an amplified engine. Plus, the Santa Fe XL has a jump on the Sport version (and other members of its class) when it comes to comfort, space, and horsepower.

Power is supplied to the Santa Fe XL by a 3.3-litre V6 GDI engine. This larger engine produces an impressive 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque, making merging into fast paced highway traffic a breeze. It has a 6-speed automatic transmission, and tows up to 5,000 lbs. Like the Sport model, drivers can choose from three different driving modes. These are Sport, Eco, and Normal.

However, with the extra size and power comes a reduction in fuel efficiency. Taking a backseat to the Sport model, the Santa Fe XL manages 12.9 L/100km in the city, 9.4 L/100km on the highway, and a combined 11.3 L/100km. But if you’re looking for all that extra space, fuel economy problem isn’t your highest priority anyway.

Safety is still something to brag about, though. When its equipped with the available Autonomous Emergency Braking system and HID headlights with Adaptive Cornering System, this large SUV is considered a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, a non-profit, independent organization.

Boasting an attractive design both inside and out, high performance standards, and all the cargo space you’ll ever need, the 2018 Santa Fe XL has everything we love from the Sport model, plus more of it.

It would make a wise choice for large families or road trip enthusiasts with moderate towing needs.

  • $32,104 – $51,603

When compared to other mid-sized and full-sized SUVs, both Sante Fe models size up quite well. They offer respectable fuel economy ratings, class-leading safety ratings, and plenty of cargo space.

Consider the Santa Fe for its excellent value, alone. Plus, it will certainly conquer Edmonton’s harsh winters.
